When I first started lifting weights at the gym, I noticed that many people would stand around talking with friends. It was social hour. I found that I would finish my entire workout in 30 minutes, while those same people stood around chatting about their day or telling stories. I often wondered if those people were getting the most efficient workouts. If you spend more time talking than actually exercising, you’re probably more likely to skip exercises so you can go home.
While it’s fine to love the gym and socialize, I don’t believe you’re getting the most efficient work out when you stop to “rest” for 15-20 minutes between exercises.
My solution: time your workouts! I started doing this a few years back. Get a great sports watch with a timer, you don’t have to spend a lot of money. Here is one I have been using and I got it at Kohl’s. It’s a sassy bright pink Armitron watch and the color makes me happy and motivates me. I am all about fun fitness gear that won’t break the bank.
Timing your workout ensures that you will keep your heart rate up and intensity high so you can burn more calories. One of my favorite ways to workout is performing supersets (2 back to back exercises). In fact, I am getting ready to launch a new 30 day challenge where I show you how to train using supersets.
If a friend comes up to chat during your workout, smile and tell them you’re timing it and you’ll be happy to come over and chat afterward. They will understand!
When your body starts showing great results, you’ll inspire those around you to start timing their workouts as well.
Another important reason to time your workouts is so that you don’t over train and hinder your results. After years of lifting weights, I have found that I can get a great workout in about 30-40 minutes, followed by 20-30 minutes of cardio.
Try it out and let me know what you think. I’d love to hear from you!
Sending positive thoughts your way!
